WEGENER ANNOUNCES ORDER FOR MPEG-2 BASED VIDEO SYSTEM FROM TVGLOBO NETWORK OF BRAZIL
Duluth, Ga. - January 17, 1995 - Wegener Corporation (NASDAQ: WGNR), a manufacturer of audio, data and video transmission products and systems based in Duluth, GA, today announced it had received an order for an MPEG-2 digital video system from the leading Brazilian broadcaster, TV Globo Network. Based in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, TV Globo Network has annual revenues of approximately $2 billion. TV Globo Network is the most important broadcaster in Brazil with 91 TV stations (both owned and affiliated), serving an estimated 40 million viewers, and 21 radio stations (both owned and affiliated). In making the announcement, Wegener said that the TV Globo Network equipment will be the first Wegener MPEG-2 system in Latin America. The Wegener products ordered by TV Globo Network will be installed in satellite news gathering (SNG) trucks. These SNG trucks will enable TV Globo Network to transmit broadcast quality MPEG-2 compressed video programming feeds from virtually anywhere. Terms of the order were not disclosed, but Wegener indicated that the initial order is about $160,000. Wegener said that it is optimistic that the MPEG-2 order being announced today has the long-term potential of blossoming into over $10 million of business from its Brazilian customers. The Company also said it expects the TV Globo network shipments to begin late in the second quarter. Commenting on the receipt of the TV Globo Network order, Robert A. Placek, President and CEO of Wegener Corporation said, "Our products ordered by TV Globo Network are Wegener MPEG-2 broadcast quality digital video encoders and decoders. These products are manufactured under a license granted by COMSAT Laboratories. These technologically advanced Wegener products provide unequaled flexibility. Nearly all of the core transmission parameters are user selectable, including aggregate data rate, video and audio data rates, FEC coding rate, and output frequency. The exciter encodes MPEG-2 video at up to 15 Mbps, occupies only 5.5" of rack space, and features a 70 MHz output. The Integrated Receiver Decoder (IRD) has an L-band input and occupies only 1.75" of rack space. Both may be controlled using Wegener's Addressable Network Control System (ANCS). And, both are ruggedly constructed to allow for Satellite News Gathering truck installation. Wegener was selected by TV Globo Network after it made a thorough comparison of competing products and, in the end, selected Wegener." Mr. Placek continued, "We are extremely pleased to receive the TV Globo Network order. While initially relatively small in dollar amount, this order marks a major step in extending the distribution of Wegener's MPEG-2 products in international markets. We believe that international sales represent an area of very large opportunity and potential for Wegener which we are working hard to exploit." Wegener Corporation, through its wholly-owned subsidiaries, is a market leader in analog and digital compression technology, designs and manufactures communications transmission and receiving equipment for the business broadcast, data communications, cable and broadcast radio and television industries for worldwide markets.
