WEGENER COMMUNICATIONS ANNOUNCES ORDER FROM EMPIRE SPORTS NETWORK FOR MPEG-2 VIDEO TRANSMISSION PRODUCTS
Duluth, Ga., July 21, 1995 - Wegener Communications has received its first order for products manufactured under a license granted by COMSAT Laboratories. The Wegener/COMSAT Labs line of products uses COMSAT video compression technology to produce MPEG-2 broadcast quality digital video encoders and decoders for use in event back haul and program distribution applications. The products ordered by Empire Sports will provide two SCPC (Single Channel Per Carrier), MPEG-2 channels that will enable Empire Sports to provide additional programming to various regions throughout its network. The initial order is for 75 receivers and 4 transmit sites. In its fifth year of operation, Buffalo-based Empire Sports Network provides regionalized sports programming to nearly three quarters of a million subscribers across New York State. Empire is an affiliate of Prime Network, a national cable television programmer of regional sports, and holds programming rights to the Buffalo Sabres ice hockey and Pittsburgh Pirates baseball teams, as well as to numerous college teams and conferences. Commenting on the order, Mr. Ron Bertovich, Vice President and General Manager of Empire Sports Network said, "Our decision to switch to digital Ku band transmission, by ordering Wegener equipment, represents a more cost efficient means of distributing programming to our affiliates. The new equipment will enable Empire Sports to continue to acquire strong regional sports programming through the use of state-of-the-art spectrum efficient satellite transmission. Additionally, the Wegener equipment will greatly enhance Empire Sports' ability to increase its regional sports coverage. In this constantly changing age of technology, our upgrade to digital Ku band puts Empire Sports and its affiliates on the cutting edge of video communications and creates tremendous growth potential for us." Bob Placek, President and CEO of Wegener Communications said,"The Empire Sports Network order confirms our belief that our COMSAT-based products represent a breakthrough in satellite video broadcasting. The VideoLynxô product line provides unequaled flexibility. Nearly all of the core transmission parameters are user selectable, including aggregate data rate, video and audio data rates, FEC coding rate, and output frequency. The VideoLynx exciter encodes MPEG-2 video at up to 15 Mbps, occupies only 5.5" of rack space, and features a 70MHz output. The IRD has an L band input and occupies only 1.75" of rack space. Both may be controlled using Wegener's Addressable Network Control System. And, both are ruggedly constructed to allow for SNG truck installation." Wegener Communications, Inc. is a subsidiary of Wegener Corporation (NASDAQ: WGNR) based in Duluth, Georgia, an Atlanta suburb. Wegener Communications designs and manufactures audio, data, and video transmission and storage products. Wegener equipment is used extensively throughout the cable television, radio and television broadcast, and business broadcast industries. For further information: Keith N.
