ARRAKIS/WEGENER CREATE FIRST INTEGRATED DIGITAL SATELLITE CONTROLLED WORK STATION
Duluth, Ga. - September 20, 1994 - Wegener Communications and Arrakis Systems have announced a strategic alliance which combines Arrakis' Gemini and DIGILINK work stations with Wegener's patented ANCS (Addressable Network Control System) and DR96 series MPEG-II digital audio receivers to create DISC (Digitally Integrated Satellite Control). DISC is the first fully integrated satellite point-to-multipoint radio distribution, storage, and production system. This revolutionary digital storage system combines playback operations, full-function editing, and production with addressable satellite network control and distribution. It also brings network E-mail, news services, tagged text, RDS, and multimedia to each affiliate. The DISC system will allow networks to customize formats and playback schedules on a station-by-station basis by downloading digitized schedules, spots, ads, liners, and programming. Each DISC system is comprised of a Wegener DR series digital receiver and an Arrakis Digilink Controller. The DR series receivers provide a high-speed data output to the Digilink controller as well as an MPEG II digital audio decoder. DISC configurations range from a simple store and forward of up to three hours of programming (DISC-SYS 1 - basic network delay) to a completely integrated digital edit and production system (DISC-SYS 6) for high velocity major market applications. The entire network is controlled from a central satellite transmit location through ANCS. ANCS is a powerful network control software system that routes network traffic to specific sites, groups of sites, or the entire network simultaneously. Providing a level of flexibility and control unavailable in conventional broadcast networks, addressability combines the precision of point-to-point communications with the economies of a point-to-multipoint broadcast. "The blending of these two technologies creates a powerful and flexible network tool," said Bob Placek, President, Wegener Communications. "The combination of real-time, scheduled, and cued control, on a station-by-station basis, gives the network deploying this system amazing programming flexibility." "The Arrakis/Wegener alliance brings the information superhighway to radio network distribution. This is the first truly interactive, bi-directional, radio programming system that allows the network to custom deliver programming to each affiliate," commented Mike Palmer, President and CEO of Arrakis. "This system redefines the business opportunities for satellite networks and their affiliates." Arrakis currently has over 1000 digital workstations in use around the world. Wegener's ANCS is also deployed world wide and services over 100,000 end users. Arrakis Systems, Inc. is the number one manufacturer of digital audio production and automation systems, consoles, and furniture for radio broadcasting. Wegener Communications, Inc. is a subsidiary of Wegener Corporation (NASDAQ: WGNR) based in Duluth, Georgia, an Atlanta suburb.
