MOODY BROADCASTING NETWORK SELECTS WEGENER FOR NEXT GENERATION DIGITAL AUDIO
Duluth, Ga. -- July 16, 1996 -- Wegener Corporation (NASDAQ: WGNR), a manufacturer of audio, data and video transmission products and systems based in Duluth, GA, today announced that Chicago based Moody Broadcasting Network placed an initial order for primary network conversion to Wegener Communications Digital FM2Æ subcarrier technology. The Wegener digital FM2Æ subcarrier technology allows Moody to continue to utilize space segment from their current analog provider SpaceComSystems of Tulsa, OK. Moody intends to have the conversion complete by October 1. The signal will be up and receivers will be in the field starting in July. This is the same digital technology that the ABC Radio Network upgraded to over the last year. Phil Shappard, Moody's Director of Satellite Services, says "We chose Wegener for many reasons. Like so many networks, we have an eye toward store-forward. After looking at all the systems available in the market place, we feel the Wegener/Arrakis Store-Forward system is the most capable, developed and mature of any system for our needs. The market place is moving toward unattended operation. The Arrakis/Wegener solution for Store-Forward and digital audio is the only system consistent with unattended requirements." Wegener Communications and Arrakis Systems announced a strategic alliance in September of 1994, which combines Arrakis' Gemini and DIGILINK work stations with Wegener's patented ANCS (Addressable Network Control System) and digital audio receivers to create the first fully integrated satellite point-to-multipoint radio distribution, storage, and production system. This evolutionary digital storage system combines playback operations, full-function editing, and production with addressable satellite network control and distribution. It also brings network E-mail, news services, tagged text, RDS, and multimedia to each affiliate. "Wegener is the undisputed industry leader in regard to command and control with their ANCS." Shappard said, "Other systems seem basic compared to the Store-Forward system that Wegener and Arrakis have jointly developed. A key to functionality in any Store-Forward system is command and control. ANCS, combined with the power of the DR185 satellite receiver, make highly functional Store-Forward possible. We at Moody will be able to offer programming and services to our affiliates that to date we have only been able to dream about." "The Wegener model DR185 digital audio receiver is the first step toward our store-forward plan," Shappard continued. "Our work is cut out for us in regard to store-forward deployment. In the months ahead we will be rolling out Wegener/Arrakis store-forward out to our owned and operated stations, then offering store-forward network wide." Wegener digital radio networks include: ABC Radio Network, Arkansas Radio Network, BBC World Service, Bible Broadcast Network, Jones Satellite Networks, Lousianna Network, Kikker Radio, Mississippi Radio Network, Moody Broadcasting Network, Morningstar Radio Network, Now Dance Radio, Pia Sociedade de Sao Paulo, Radio Excelsior Ltda., Radio Guaiba S/A, Radio Gaucha, Radio Itatiaia, Radio Rocks Moscow, Radiotelevisione Itatiana Ltda, Reach Satellite Network, SW Networks, USA Radio Network, and Virgin Radio.
