WEGENER MPEG-2 PRODUCTS IN SERVICE BY TURNER BROADCASTING FOR DAILY HONG KONG FEED
Duluth, Ga. -- April 15, 1996 -- Wegener Corporation (NASDAQ: WGNR) today announced it has delivered its Series DV2000 MPEG-2 digital video products to Turner Broadcasting System, Inc. (TBS). Replacing an existing analog channel, the equipment is being used to transmit daily, live-anchor news broadcasts from CNN's Hong Kong studios for use on CNN and CNN International program services. Turner Broadcasting, for many years a customer of Wegener, accepted delivery of the equipment after extensive live-satellite testing at Keystone Communications' uplink in Los Angeles, California and at the Stanley earth station in Hong Kong. Commenting on the delivery of the products to Turner Broadcasting System, Inc., Bob Placek, President and CEO, Wegener Communications said, "This delivery and successful transmission from Hong Kong marks a major milestone in Wegener's corporate history, the beginning of full production of our MPEG-2 digital video broadcast products. CNN and other Turner Broadcasting subsidiaries, as well as a number of other potential network customers, have shown considerable interest in these new Wegener products and shown patience as we have put them through exhaustive test trials. We are pleased that the overwhelming customer response has been that the DV2000 MPEG-2 digital video products are ideal for satellite news gathering, as well as primary program distribution. These technologically advanced Wegener products provide unequaled flexibility. Nearly all of the core transmission parameters are user selectable, including aggregate data rate, video and audio data rates, FEC coding rate, and frequency." The DVT2000 transmitter features multiple video input formats -- serial D1, component, composite, and S-Video. The transmitter is controlled locally with a front panel keypad and LCD display, remotely through an RS232 modem port, or addressably with Wegener's network control protocol. The DVT2000 transmits one compressed video signal, up to six mono audio channels (or three stereo pairs), one optional synchronous data channel, and one 9.6 kbps asynchronous data channel for customer use. The audio input signal for the DVT2000 may be analog or AES/EBU digital. The DVR2000 IRD occupies 1.75" of rack space and is a complete L-band Integrated Receiver/Decoder. It features composite, S-Video, and Serial D1 video outputs. It also provides relay contact closures for control of external devices.
