WEGENER CHOSEN BY NATIONAL TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY TO SUPPLY DIGITAL VIDEO NETWORK FOR DISTANCE LEARNING
Duluth, Ga. - November 22, 1996 - Wegener Corporation (NASDAQ: WGNR), a manufacturer of audio, data and video transmission products and systems based in Duluth, GA, today announced it has received an order from the National Technological University (NTU), based in Fort Collins, CO, for MPEG-2 digital video transmission and receiving equipment to be used in an international distance learning satellite network. NTU will reach subscribers located throughout the Pacific Rim with the new network. NTU is a private, non-profit institution founded in 1984 to serve the advanced educational needs of today's busy, highly mobile engineers, scientists and technical managers. NTU is accredited by the Commission on Institutions of Higher Education of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. On a national and international basis, NTU offers a wide range of instructional television courses taught by the top faculty of 46 of the nation's leading engineering schools and other organizations and institutions selected because of their special expertise. NTU began regular satellite delivery of advanced technical education in August, 1985. Participating Universities have earth stations installed to uplink courses from their campuses. NTU currently has more than 1200 credit courses available from its participating universities. In the 1995-96 school year, 1,350 working professionals and managers were admitted to NTU degree programs. During the last school year, enrollment in NTU's non-credit short courses exceeded 100,000 students. The network is based on Wegener's Series DVT196 MPEG-2 Digital Video Transmit System and Wegener's DVR295 Addressable Digital Video SCPC IRD (Single Channel Per Carrier Integrated Receiver Decoder). The Wegener Series DVT196 MPEG-2 Digital Video Transmit System converts analog video to an MPEG-2 digitally encoded data stream and modulates it for transmission over satellite. The DVR295 receives and decodes both MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 bit streams at data rates ranging from 1.5 to 4.6 Mbps. Compatible with Wegener's patented network control protocol, these products provide outstanding flexibility and control unavailable addressability combines the precision of point-to-point communications with the economies of a point-to-multipoint broadcast. Wegener control systems are used by commercial and private business broadcasters to disseminate information, programming and/or remote control signaling to over 100,000 receive sites throughout the world. "We are very pleased to be chosen by a prestigious organization like NTU to provide their Pacific Rim distance learning network. The DVR295 is a very flexible receiver which allows NTU to take advantage of the satellite cost savings associated with lower data rates while still maintaining the visual quality of MPEG-2 video," commented Bob Placek, President and CEO, Wegener Communications. "With multiple data rate capability, NTU is able to transmit at as low as 1.5 Mbps for low motion programming or as high as 4.6 Mbps for high motion content. " Wegener Communications, Inc. is a subsidiary of Wegener Corporation (NASDAQ: WGNR) based in Duluth, Georgia, an Atlanta suburb. The Company offers both MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 digital video transmit and receive systems for such diverse applications as private business television networks, satellite news gathering (SNG) and distance learning. Wegener Communications designs and manufactures communications transmission and receiving equipment for the business broadcast, data communications, cable and broadcast radio and television industries for worldwide markets. |
