WEGENER CORPORATION REPORTS FIRST FISCAL QUARTER RESULTS
Revenues Up 52% Year-To-Year - Net Income and EPS Advance Order Received From Turner Broadcasting Systems, Inc.Wegener Equipment To Be Used For Moscow and London Video Broadcast Feeds Duluth, GA - December 19, 1996 - Wegener Corporation (NASDAQ: WGNR), today announced results for the first quarter of fiscal 1997, ended November 29, 1996. Wegener's revenues for the first quarter of fiscal 1997 were $6.6 million, up 52% from revenues of $4.4 million for the first quarter of fiscal 1996. Net income was $304,000, or $0.03 per share for the quarter, versus net income of $65,000, or $0.01 per share, for the comparable three months ended December 1, 1995. Wegener reported that the backlog was approximately $27,000,000 as of November 29, 1996, compared to $28,045,000 on August 30, 1996 and compared to $30,996,000 on December 1, 1995. Elaborating on recent developments, Robert A. Placek, President and CEO of Wegener Corporation, commented, "After the end of the first quarter, we announced the receipt during the first quarter of an order from Turner Broadcasting System, Inc. (TBS) for six sets, with commitments for an additional eight sets, of our Series DV2000 MPEG-2 digital video products. Replacing existing analog channels, the equipment is being used to transmit daily, live-anchored news broadcasts from CNN's production center in London and live news coverage from Moscow for use on CNN and CNN International program services." Continuing, Mr. Placek said, "Turner Broadcasting, for many years a customer of Wegener, placed the order after extensive testing and competitive evaluation. This order is to be shipped in the second quarter of fiscal 1997. We are pleased that the consistent and overwhelming response has been that the DV2000 MPEG-2 digital video products are ideal for professional satellite news gathering, as well as primary program distribution. No other manufacturer has combined the features and flexibility of these technologically advanced Wegener products in such a small rugged package." Wegener also said that, during the first fiscal quarter, repeat orders were received from Ascent Network Services for the MSNBC Network, TV Globo of Brazil, and Show TV of Turkey for Wegener's DV2000 broadcast digital video products. The equipment will be used on Ascent's expansion of the MSNBC network for NBC. TV Globo broadcasts sporting events from throughout Brazil and Show TV provides satellite news gathering (SNG) services throughout Turkey. Orders were also received from Hughes Network Systems, Worldcom Systems, Swedish broadcaster TERACOM, and EPROM a Turkish broadcaster. TERACOM is responsible for the operation of all terrestrial broadcasting of radio and television transmissions in Sweden. Both TERACOM and EPROM are using the DV2000 equipment to provide SNG services. Additionally the Company said that an order was received from the National Technological University (NTU), based in Fort Collins, CO, for MPEG-2 digital video transmission and receiving equipment to be used in its international distance learning satellite network. NTU reaches subscribers located throughout the Pacific Rim with the new network. Other significant bookings include orders from cable television distributor Mega Hertz who placed multiple orders for analog video and network cue and control products. Cable television programmer The Weather Channel placed an order for an additional 1000 headend graphics display units. Multipoint Communications of the United Kingdom and Impsatel of Ecuador placed orders for digital audio networks.
