WEGENER CORPORATION REPORTS FISCAL FIRST QUARTER RESULTS
* Pace of New Order Bookings Increasing * Duluth, GA -- December 23, 1997 -- Wegener Corporation (NASDAQ: WGNR), today announced results for the first quarter of fiscal 1998, ended November 28, 1997. Wegeners revenues for the first quarter of fiscal 1998 were $6,706,000, compared to revenues of $6,643,000 for the first quarter of fiscal 1997. Earnings were $283,000, or $0.02 per share, versus net income of $304,000, or $0.03 per share, for the quarter ended November 29, 1996. Wegener reported that the backlog was $19,268,000 as of November 28, 1997 and that it has grown since that date. The backlog was $19,501,000 as of August 29, 1997 and $10,653,000 as of November 29, 1996. Elaborating on the results, Robert A. Placek, President and CEO of Wegener Corporation, commented, The first quarter fiscal 1998 saw bookings ahead of the same period in fiscal 1997, with total first quarter fiscal 1998 bookings at $6.3 million, which included orders for $3.5 million in cable industry products, led primarily by Wegener distributor, Mega Hertz. New distributor NSN Network Systems had almost $1 million in orders for both digital audio equipment and COMPEL(TM), Wegeners patented network control system. Other leading bookings were for Wegeners digital video and business music products. Of the total bookings for first quarter fiscal 1998, over $5.8 million is scheduled for shipment this fiscal year. Continuing, Mr. Placek said, Subsequent to the close of the first quarter, Wegener received new orders bringing the total fiscal 1998 bookings to more that $10 million, a figure significantly larger than total bookings for the comparable period in the preceding fiscal year. FOX Cable Networks has placed an order for $2.7 million for UNITY4000(TM) MPEG-2 digital video satellite receivers. The additional $2.7 million order from FOX underscores the excellent performance of this receiver. Part of Wegeners UNITY(TM) digital product family, the UNITY4000 is utilized by FOX Sports Net, FX Networks and fxM: Movies from FOX. The new order is in addition to an order placed by FOX for $11.8 million in May, 1997 for UNITY4000 receivers and Wegeners COMPEL network control system. Mr. Placek added, Also after the end of the first quarter, Turner Broadcasting System (TBS), ordered additional digital video encoders and receivers for its news gathering operations. Orders from major broadcasters like FOX and Turner make a clear statement. Wegeners digital products and network control systems work. They provide these broadcasters with the powerful network control features they need. In addition, other major networks are evaluating both UNITY satellite receivers and COMPEL network control systems. We believe these products will result in additional significant orders, resulting in our goal of profitability in fiscal 1998.
