WEGENER TEAMS WITH SARNOFF FOR HDTV

NAB, Las Vegas -- April 20, 1999 -- Wegener Communications (NASDAQ: WGNR) has joined with Sarnoff Corporation in a venture to develop advanced infrastructure for HDTV broadcast networks.

“Wegener will collaborate with Sarnoff in the development of new HDTV satellite communications products”, states Terry Smith, Director, DTV Professional Systems, Sarnoff Corporation. “Key results of this work are technologies that significantly increase satellite transmission capacity to new levels of efficiency.”

HDTV signals use large amounts of satellite capacity. Increasing efficiency enables broadcasters to provide more program channels or enhanced HDTV quality at their discretion.

“This puts Wegener Communications clearly on the map providing second generation HDTV products”, said Wegener Chairman & CEO Robert Placek.

“To date broadcasters have cautiously deployed HDTV to just a small subset of their networks. By focusing R&D efforts on this second generation of HDTV offerings, we will participate in broadcast networks large scale deployment of HDTV.”
