WEGENER COMMUNICATIONS EXHIBITS AT WESTERN CABLE SHOW

LOS ANGELES, December 16, 1999 /PRNewswire/ — Western Cable Show — Wegener Corporation (Nasdaq: WGNR - news) announced it is exhibiting at the 1999 Western Cable Show. The Western Cable Show, sponsored by the California Cable Television Association (CCTA), brings together cable programming networks, operators and manufacturers in the second largest annual display of the latest cable television technology. The convention also provides educational sessions and workshops on application uses of the newest technologies and issues facing the cable television industry today.

Wegener Communications, booth 1169, is demonstrating new and current products used by cable programmers and operators to deliver cable television content to more than 5,000 headends around the country. Wegener's product demonstrations include:

The introduction of UNITY-IP Data Broadcast System. UNITY-IP is a high bandwidth data delivery system for cable television programmers and operators to deliver high-demand content such as web pages, streaming video and audio. Current terrestrial networks get bogged down transmitting the same content to many users. UNITY-IP offers a satellite bypass for Internet content, enabling cable operators to provide one of the highest bandwidth services available. In addition, UNITY-IP is Compel Controlled to segment data bandwidth according to groups of users for each unique business model.

Wegener's patented COMPEL Network Management System will also be demonstrated at the show. COMPEL, with its proven track record with cable programmers such as FOX Television, allows networks to regionalize content and advertising through total IRD control. New software features being demonstrated include COMPEL Web Access and COMPEL Bandwidth on Demand. COMPEL Web Access allows control of IRD's from anywhere in the world through the Internet using simply a web client. COMPEL Bandwidth on Demand allows networks to manage use of transponder bandwidth and multiple uplinks from a single COMPEL server.

In addition, Wegener has teamed with DiviCom to provide end-to-end best of class multi-channel encoding system solutions and is demonstrating these at the show. The encoding system includes multiple DiviCom MV 12 video encoders transmitting at different bit rates and chroma profiles, 4:2:2 and 4:2:0. COMPEL Control is added to the digital transport stream providing complete IRD management.

In addition, Wegener's UNITY family of IRD's are being demonstrated including the UNITY 4000, 4422 and 401 Receivers. The UNITY 4000 is being used by FOX Television to deliver its programming to cable headends. The UNITY 4422 is a broadcast quality receiver, while the UNITY 401 serves the business television markets.
