Wegener Receives Order from
Major Broadcast Television Network
(June 7, 2001) DULUTH, Georgia Wegener Corporation (Nasdaq: WGNR), a leading provider of digital satellite transmission equipment to broadcast television and cable networks worldwide, announced today that subsequent to its third quarter just ended, it has received an order for more than 200 of its UNITY Integrated Receiver/Decoders (IRDs) from a major television broadcast network, to digitize their news service to its owned and operated (O&O) and authorized affiliate stations throughout the country. The agreement also includes the sale of a COMPEL Network Management and Control System to support the satellite delivery of programming to these facilities. Shipments against this order are expected to commence during the current (fourth) quarter of Wegener's fiscal 2001 year.
The final selection process for the network to integrate a Wegener solution was made after a lengthy technical review of competitive IRDs and network management and control systems in their labs. In addition to satellite delivered support for live "breaking" news, the network is migrating to the distribution of other news stories to remote digital file servers using Wegener technology. Ultimately, this digital migration will allow the network to provide both live and "file" news footage to the desktops of editors at all affiliates.
"Networks continue to transition to digital technology for content distribution, and Wegener technology is a critical part of this transition," said Keith N. Smith, president of Wegener Communications. "This network customer will use Wegener technology to custom deliver, demodulate and decode news footage feeds to its hundreds of affiliates, allowing each to edit and prepare them more efficiently for local broadcast than with previous technologies. As broadcast networks and cable providers continue to upgrade their systems and technology, I am confident Wegener will continue to play a significant role."
