WEGENER DEMONSTRATES LIVE FEED OF HDTV SIGNALS IN SAN ANTONIO
Duluth, GA -- June 7, 2002 -- For the first time, WEGENER (NASDAQ: WGNR)
is demonstrating live carriage of off- air broadcast network signals
using the DTV700 digital television signal processor at the SCTE trade
show. At WEGENER's Booth #854, visitors can view two local broadcast
network affiliates' high definition television (HDTV) signals multiplexed
onto a single 6MHz channel for QAM modulation and delivery to cable
subscribers. Signals from San Antonio NBC affiliate KMOL and from CBS
affiliate KENS are being picked up by antenna feed from the Henry B.
Gonzalez Convention Center, then processed and multiplexed by the DTV700
for live display on an HDTV monitor. The signal is being displayed using
the new Pioneer Voyager 3511 HD high definition digital cable set-top
box.
The DTV700 signal processor is WEGENER's low cost solution designed
specifically for cable system delivery of off-air broadcast digital
television signals to consumers with HDTV sets. Recent commitments to
the FCC by the NCTA and the ten largest US MSOs (Multiple System Operators)
to carry digital broadcast signals in major markets by January 1, 2003(1)
have underscored the cable industry's immediate need for compact, low
cost digital signal processing equipment. WEGENER's unique position
as a quality manufacturer of products designed for special applications
brings flexibility, cost- effectiveness and immediate availability to
cable operators focused on providing optimal service to their early-adopting
HDTV subscribers.
The WEGENER DTV700 features a built-in multiplexor for combining two
8VSB RF signals into a single 38 Mbps ASI output to feed the QAM modulator,
for carriage on one 6MHz channel. It also accepts ASI inputs, so optical
or microwave pickup options are easily accommodated. For 64 QAM systems,
the built-in multiplexor allows combining one digital broadcast signal
with another ASI source to fully utilize the available channel bandwidth.
Its advanced PSIP processing feature provides the flexibility to modify
or delete extraneous program elements from the stream (e.g., private
data services), or to modify channel numbers. Any PID conflicts between
multiplexed broadcast sources are automatically resolved. Control is
accomplished by either the front panel or a simple browser interface.
Ned Mountain, Executive Vice President of WEGENER Communications, stated,
"The DTV700 is by far the most flexible and cost-effective solution
for cable systems carrying broadcast digital signals. Because it was
designed specifically for digital broadcast processing, the DTV700 is
not encumbered with the expense of additional functions that are often
part of alternate solutions being used for this application. Yet, it
is designed to allow for future enhancements and upgrades as the vision
of terrestrial digital carriage on cable becomes more clear. We are
taking orders now for July/August deliveries of the DTV700 processor."
The DTV700 is also on display at the SCTE trade show in both the Mega
Hertz and Arris booths.
