SCIENTIFIC-ATLANTA
ORDERS PRODUCTS FROM WEGENER TO SUPPORT DIGITAL SOLUTIONS FOR CABLE
HEADENDS
(May
23, 2003) – Duluth, Georgia – WEGENER Corporation
(NASDAQ: WGNR) today announced Scientific-Atlanta (NYSE: SFA) has placed
an order with Wegener to provide private label digital video TV products
to add to the Scientific-Atlanta portfolio of headend solutions sold
through Scientific-Atlanta’s distribution channels to cable operators
in the United States and Canada.
The new products are intended to reduce the cost and enable the delivery
of off-air digital broadcasts over a cable network. The first of these
products will receive 8VSB, over-the-air digital HD (High Definition)
or SD (Standard Definition) TV broadcast services and launch these services
onto a traditional cable television network. Scientific-Atlanta initially
plans to introduce two versions of this new product. The basic demodulator
will provide demodulation of 8VSB broadcast television services to provide
an ASI output. The more advanced version will also include a built-in
multiplex feature to allow the combining of two 8VSB broadcast signals
into a single 38Mbps ASI output for injection into 256 QAM cable applications.
These products are expected to ship by mid-summer and will be economically
priced versus comparable products.
“Digital TV, especially HDTV is positioned to be a key driver
of growth in the cable industry and we’re excited to be working
with Scientific-Atlanta to accelerate the availability of cost-effective,
state-of-the-art HDTV off-air products, ” said WEGENER Executive
Vice President Ned Mountain. “We expect our off-air HDTV signal
processing solution to be the first of many new products that will enhance
cable operators’ ability to deliver HD services.”
“WEGENER’s off-air HD signal processing solution is a good
fit with our current HDTV platform and will help us deliver additional
value to our customers,” said John Morrow, vice president and
general manager of headend systems at Scientific-Atlanta. “We
look forward to further working with WEGENER’s technology to bring
innovative, cost-effective digital video products to market that will
enhance the consumer’s digital cable experience."
